Absentee Bidding

Absentee Bidding

Absentee Bidding

At Hayward’s we realise that we have many buyers from out of town and that not everybody can make it into the auction rooms on auction day. That is why we have systems in place so that people can leave absentee bids.

So what is an absentee bid?
An absentee or book-bid is when customers ask the auction house to bid on their behalf up to a certain amount. For example, if you wanted to bid on a piece of furniture and you didn’t want to pay more than $100 for that amount the auctioneer would bid up to $100 for you but not beyond that amount. The auctioneer will not automatically start the biding at your top amount but will start lower and work up to your amount. If no one else is bidding then you will get the amount for less than you bid.

You need to remember that auction houses charge a buyer’s premium which is added to the final amount you pay. So if you did leave a bid of $100 and you win the item you would have to pay $117.25 when you come to collect the items.

There are 2 ways to leave an absentee bid; one is for those people who come into the rooms to attend viewing and the other is for those people who cannot make it into the rooms.

If you can’t get to the auction rooms.
You can register to bid and place absentee bids online on our website.
You need to follow the link that says click here to place absentee bids on line.
This page has a search function so if you don’t want to scroll through the entire catalogue you can go directly to the type of item you are interested in. For example if you type Doulton in the search box you will find all the Royal Doulton item’s in the auction. You can then leave an absentee bid by placing an amount in the book-bid box under the photo. Once you have entered in all your bids you will need to enter your personal details and then submit your bids.

Please remember that you will be asked to pay a buyer’s premium of 17.5% (including GST) and you are entering into a contract with the auction house to purchase the items.

Once we have received your bids we will email you back to confirm that we have received them.

If you can make it into the auction rooms.

When you come into the auction house, you will find the registration forms by the office. Once you are registered you will have a bidding number, you can use this bidding number to fill out a bidding form. You just need to write the lot number, a description of the item and the amount you would like to bid up to. Please remember that you will be asked to pay a buyer’s premium of 17.5% and you are entering into a contract with the auction house to purchase the items.

After the auction.
You can contact us on the afternoon of the auction by calling (03)4772559 or email us to find out if any of your bids were successful. For people out of town we can courier smaller items to you (for a fee). However for larger items the buyer will need to arrange transportation.
If you have any questions about leaving an absentee bid talk to one of our staff members or email us at info@haywards.co.nz.
