Buying at auction

Buying at auctionBidding at a live auction is an exciting and unique way to purchase items. At Hayward's Auction House we hold a number of different auctions over the course of a year and we cater for a very wide ranges of tastes and styles. No matter what you are interested in, chances are that eventually it will come up for sale at auction.

General Auctions: Our most common auctions are our General Auctions. These auctions are held most Wednesdays in our rooms at 5 Carroll Street, Dunedin. Every General Auction is unique and you'll be amazed at what goes under the hammer, everything from washing machines to giant models of Homer Simpson.

Our General Auction is open for viewing at the following times:

Saturday 10am -2pm
Monday 9am - 5pm
Tuesday 9am - 6pm

Antique & Collectables:  Our Antique & Collectable auctions are very popular. We hold between 8-10 Antique & Collectable auctions per year. At these auctions you will be able to bid on antique and retro furniture, jewellery, fine china, art, bottles, medals, rare books and all manner of items.

Art Auctions: Our art auctions are a highlight on the auction calendar. We usually hold around 2 of these per year. This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase quality art from recognised artists from all over New Zealand & further afield.

Other Auctions: Over the course of the year we also hold tool & handyman auctions, police auctions and clearance & site auctions.

How do I know what is for sale each week?

Our catalogue is available from this website on Saturday morning the week before the auction or you can pick one up at the auction rooms. We also post photos on our Facebook page around the same time. Click here to link to our Facebook page. However the best way to know what is happening is to come to our viewings. Auction regulars make a habit of coming to the viewings every week. You are more than welcome to bring in a cup of coffee while you browse all that the auction has to offer.

How do I bid on a item?
If you haven't bid at a live auction before then our staff will be happy to help you out. Don't worry if you scratch your nose or raise your eyebrow during the auction, you will not end up buying something. Bidding at auction is easy, exciting and enjoyable.

What if I can't make it to the auction?
If you can't make it to the auction you can leave an absentee bid or a book bid.
To do this you need to select the items you are interested in and then fill out a form which lets us know that the maximum amount is that you want to pay for an item. On auction day the auctioneer bids on your behalf, if you are successful and win the bid then the item is stored until you come and pay for it  and pick it up.
